Black Border Question

I've seen for quite a while that pictures taken with Hasselblad cameras have the black border with the 2 VV in the frame. This goes as far back as some of the old Hasselblad Forum magazines and before scanning was done. Plus in the Hasselblad manual by Wildi, he mentions the black border around the frame. None of my negatives have that black border around the frame. The edges of my negatives have the 2 VV pointing outward not inward. Is there something wrong with my backs? Both my A16S and my A24 backs have new seals so I'm really confused!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!

I know that the black border can be added with scanning on regular 6x6 negatives but my A16S produces 4x4 negatives and to my knowledge there aren't any 4x4 masks. To scan my A16S negatives, they had to use the 6 x 4.5 mask in which there is no border on the top or bottom of those negatives.

Your backs are ok. On your negative there is indeed no border and the arrows are going outward. In the negativ to positiv process it will switch. If your mask is slightly larger, light will shine through the clear part of your negativ giving a black border with the VVs on your positiv paper.

This is only a fraction of the original picture. The scan is at 22mp resolution!
Sorry I couldn't upload the whole picture to show how the 4x4 negative was scanned using the 6 x 4.5 mask.

Since I have yet to shoot transpariencies, will they have the border or will that only come when the image is scanned?
Thanks!

Well, everything that comes of pure transparant in the border of a negative film is pitch black on slides.

You can file out the edges of a "negative carrier" if you use an old enlarger in your darkroom, so that you can see the outside edges of the film. That is what I have done in my darkroom.

My new Epson 4490 "negative carrier" has quite a bit larger "image area" than the film image itself, so you can easily position your negative so that you are also scanning the outside edges of the film, including the "V" notches. You can also use a file to "open up" the outside edges of your scanner negative carrier, if there is enough room to do so, and you are careful.
