CFV-39 Fault

For those of us here who have a Hasselblad CFV-39 digital back for the 500 series and 200 series cameras -

I bought this back just after Christmas, and have since shot about 100 frames. I did not notice the problem for a long while, as I edit and print only in B/W, not colour. But at 100% on screen, it shows up as an intermittent vertical magenta line, always 1/3 in from the left-hand edge of a landscape format shot. It is not a light leak or reflection, as it is hard-edged and is exactly the same whichever body or lens I use. The back has now been returned to Hasselblad UK, who in turn have sent it to the factory in Denmark under Warranty.

I am not intending to scare you, but it just might be worth checking your files very carefully. See the attached example section of a much larger image.

Good advice, but valid for probably any kind of digital sensor. I have seen this previously on Pentax, Nikon and Leica too. The fix is usually in firmware to map out a bad pixel which is not uncommon. I would be interested to hear what it is in this case.
 
I had the same problem with my CFV-II. According to Hasselblad support this is a calibration issue and should indeed be solvd by a firmware update. In my case the update did not help and I had to sent the back to Hasselblad. And there it still is. Diagnosis is "line error", which does not make me any wiser...
I expect it back from service later this week and will let know when there is more information.

Pure guessing here: could be sensor is bad, in the sense that a complete line of pixels which is driven/read in one go has a problem.
 
There is no update on this issue with my CFV-II. It's been at Hasselblad for 4 weeks now and they cannot even tell me whether it has been repaired yet. I call them twice per week for an update since there is no communication from their side. Only positive is that Hasselblad recently sent me a CFV that I can use until my back is ready.

I am in the UK, so my CFV-39 went back to Hasselblad UK and from there to the factory in Denmark. They have had it for two weeks now - I asked for an update last week and was told that the repair was "close to completion". So I shall wait and see . . .

Cfv-39

I have mine now for about 8 months and made close to 800 pics without any problem. I am sure Hasselblad will correct the problem.

An Update -

My CFV-39 was returned to me today. The repair took exactly four weeks, from my despatching it to Hasselblad to its delivery back here. After a great deal of testing and re-testing in Denmark, it has been fitted with a brand new sensor under warranty. I took some shots this afternoon, and all seems well.

Great to have it back again - and many thanks to Paul Gould at Hasselblad UK for his courteous attention to my problem.

Good news for you! Appears my long shot with regards to the cause of the issue has been proven right on the mark.

You can be very happy. I received my CFV-II back after 5 weeks and lots of calls to Hasselblad Ahrensburg.
The service report says that it was calibrated, cleaned, adjusted and tested several times. Sent to Denmark, sent to Sweden and back to Denmark. And guess what, the problem is still there. What an unbelievable disappointment this is :-(

Anyhow, good luck with your CFV-39.

Is your problem the same as mine - a vertical magenta line on part of the image, always in the same place? In which case it is almost certainly a column fault, and can only be cured by sensor replacement. If you read the Kodak tech sheet for these sensors, "hot" columns are not allowed to pass the defect check.

yes, I think it is the same. Only difference is that the magenta line is horizontal, in my case. It is very sharp and thin, it starts at the left edge of the picture and ends abruptly somewhere close to half width.
I'll have to contact Hasselblad again after Easter.

You have my heartfelt sympathy. After waiting five weeks for the CFV to be returned, it must have been a crushing blow to find that the problem was still there. It does sound a bit different to the fault mine had, though. But really it is not good enough with equipment at this price level for the factory not to have sent it back in perfect working order.
