Lets just say that i want to shoot a shot at 9 seconds. Now i presume that these are the orange numbers on the lens? How do i get them to move around to line up with the f number which i want so that i can take the shot as they seem to be kind of 'locked'. Any advice gratefully received.

On your lens you have the shutter speed scale: 1/500 sec to 1 sec + bulb setting (B). In B mode, the shutter will remain open while you have the shutter button pressed down. When you release it, the shutter will close.
Set the speed to B and press the shutter release for as long is needed (9 sec).

With the old 500CM it was possible to lock the bouton. So you got a "T" exposure. Practical indeed.

that's right and that was a very nice feature .... although it is pretty easy to get a cable release with a lock function..
