Scratched front lens element

I traded my old chrome 50 Distagon for the black 50mm CF last week. I just noticed a silver colored mark on the lens, slightly off center. It is about a milimeter wide and 4 milimeters long. It is so shinny that it looks like the surface of a mirror. I doubt if it will affect the photos taken with it, but I have not had time to try it yet. I read, years ago, that when you have such a scratch or mark on the lens surface, you should take a tiny spotting brush and dab flat black paint on the scratch. Is this the correct thing to do?

Most smaller marks will not show in the images.
Difficult to say what your lens will produce.
Do some tests before you do anything to the front lens.
From what you describe this looks like a coating problem.
