Zeiss 50mm lens shade issue?

Hi All,

I recently picked up a Zeiss 50mm CF FLE lens from KEH. Bargain according to KEH but VG to Excellent in my book. When I got it, I tried to install the B60 hood and to my surprise it rests skewed ie rather than being squared with the camera it has angles like a diamond. I gather the lens must have been serviced at one point and the rotation not correctly set. Is realigning the barrel an easy job for DIY ( I have a spanner tool to remove the front ring) or should i leave it as such until it needs a CLA and get it reset then? Are there screws under the FLE ring that hold the barrel in place? thanks

The front ring has a pin to locate the ring in the right position.
That pin is probably missing with the ring from your lens.

Could be fitting of a new front ring is the option to go for because these rings are subject to wear.

Keep in mind Hasselblad parts do not come cheap.
Depending on the speed with which the last price increase is made effective the ring will cost 50-85 USD.

Remove the ring containig the lens number is all you need to do to refit or exchange the bayonet ring.
No hidden screws or other surprises this time.

I'd remove the current ring and check for the index-pin. If it is missing it is probably not a problem to install some kind of replacement pin. Saves you considerable $$

I did check the pin and it is in the correct position locked in its slot. It is just that it is 45 degrees from where is should be to get the shade correctly positioned. I really believe that the barrel was not repositioned correctly. Sending it back to KEH will add cost and optically the lens is perfect, getting another "bargain" one might not get me as good a lens. Thanks all.

Assuming you have the tools/skills: remove the the serial-number ring and check the bajonet ring's position. This is not a difficult job. From what I recall it is not the barrel that you can misalign 45 degr.

I did unscrew the serial number ring. there is an outer ring that has the pin which can be rotated. The problem is the pin only allows it to rest in one position which is off-axis. The position where the pin rests is defined by the rest of the lens barrel which is firmly attached. this is the part that I assume was misaligned during a cleaning or repair.

Ah, OK. Yep, then someone must have been asleep while reassembling the lens it seems.

You may not want to make an exchange with KEH, but maybe give them a call, explain the problem, and see if they would correct the misalignment. They do have a repair facilities and even if they charged a small amount to make it right, wouldn't it be worth it? They have usually been pretty good when I've had to deal with them. They might possibly do it for free if you're a good talker.

Excellent idea. I was going to suggest that.
