CFV on 500 EL/M

Hi group,

My first question on this panel; I hope it is an interesting one...

I use a CFV on my 503 CX, but I can get a 500 EL/M for a bargain.
As I understand from the CFV manual I can operate the EL/M with Phocus on my MacBook and release the shutter, the mirror returns as the shutter cocks again, ready for another shot.

Can any one confirm this?? After focussing and setting aperture on the camera, I can stay behind the laptop and operate the camera??

And is it possible to get new batteries and charger for the EL/M ?

Hi Hermank,

With a fire wire cable between the camera and the computer you can release the shutter from the camera with your computer. I know it works with the 503CX (as you probably will know).

However I do not know if it also works with the EL/M. The manual does not mention this would not work with a EL/M, so I guess it will work.

Refering to your answer; yes, but I like to know if the EL/M, after firing the shot, is cocking the shutter and returning the mirror. ready for another shot.
With the 503 I have to move from the laptop to the camera to do this action. I wonder if I can stay behind the laptop with the EL/M.
(sometimes that can be very convenient, depending on what your doing)

I myself have no experience with the EL/M. But the manual states:"When you are connected to a computer and you want to control theh camera from Phocus, the following rules apply:
* A winder CW and the Exposure Cable must be attached.
*
*
When initiating a shot from Phocus, the computer sends a signal to the sensor unit, wich triggers the Winder CW which in turm triggers the shutter ....., etc."

I know this does not answer your question, but I guess the EL/M does the same as the winder CW.

Yes , I suppose it works like that. I wanted to be sure. Although the EL/M is a bargain, I have to find new batteries and a charger, the camera probally needs a CLA and mayby the digital back needs to be aligned with this 'new' body.....

Can't be of too much help as I use mine with a 500CM, but it is interesting. I do get questions about what that winder crank is for. Hope it works out for you, not sure why the CFV would need any special alignment if the camera frame is still in good shape.

Dear Fliger,

V system camera's were designed for film. Sensors are so much more critical that, unfortunately, often de camera body needs alignment with the digital back.
Even with modern digitalcamera's , like Canon or Nikon etc, it can occur that sensor/mirrorbox/screen needs adjustment (so I heard......)
Anyway; it is easy to check this at home.

Well, the cfv does the job. From the cfv you put a wire included in the kit that fire your EL. I did not exactly made the same use as what you need, but I use the cfv and motorized body to take automaticaly 20pictures every 30 second to test it. Another day I found the wire to conect the cfv to my pc. In this case the pictures went directly on my hard disk. I noticed it works but there was no need for me. And the goal to buy a CFV is to avoid wires !
For my point of view, there is no need to fire the EL from the PC as it's realy easier and mor confortable to use didicased wire to fire EL directly.
I got an ELM in a Kit (I just wanted the 90° viewfinder) without battery. As the value of a ELM is so low nowaday, it's not worth to find official battery. You may find adapter for 9v batery on B, however I bought a 9V battery for 1$ + wire to plug the batery for 2$ use 2 inches of scotch and my ELM works like a horse.
BTW, with film the body need to be aligned too. I used Velvia 50 years and ago Tecnical pan.: Bad focussing pictures were more expensive at this old time than today with digital.
 
Ah yes, Tech Pan, those ultra thin negatives were capable of some really astounding smothness and resolution, no grain to speak of to hide sloppy work or bad equipment. A friend who is a well know ethnographic photographer here in Alaska was first quite disappointed with his film Hasselblad and though it just wasn't a good as it's reputation, till he discovered it was his back. So even film cameras can have issues. Canon does not adjust the body per se, but the autofocus system, I have done this to a few lenses, though quite minor. Not sure what Hassy does, there would be several possibilities.

My new digital (50) CFV back was also out of focus, although my old 19 CFV back was not. I sent it to Hasselblad. They alligned the back to one of my bodies and now it works perfect. If you have more than one camera body, Hasselblad says it can align one specific back only to one specific body. So be careful which body you sent with your back to Hasselblad.

I use my cfv39 back on my EL/M and have done exactly what you are asking. If you use the short multi pin cable that is included with the cfv39 back that goes between the back and the multi pin connector on the EL/M battery housing it will work. It fires the camera and advances and cocks the shutter plus brings the mirror down. I believe you could lock the mirror up as well and fire the camera from Phocus.
 
I have just repaired my old EL/M and made a trigger for my CFV-16, Works really well and you can now fire the shutter from an iPhone app too.

Gotta love technology.

I have an original battery for the EL/M but made myself a 9V adapter for convenience. I do not shoot tethered very often and usually the CFV-16 is welded to my 503CX but it was fun playing around with the old girl and seeing what she can do.

1 Issue that I found (doesn't really bother me at all) when I first fire the EL/M it will give me 2-3 shots then settle down and shoot a single frame, seems only when 'cold' will it fire twice or thrice. I guess this would be more of an issue using film. I am considering getting an old Leaf 11MP tethered back and using it solely in the studio.
