First results of the CFV39 Part three.

had a hiccup this morning with my back... took a shot-it was fine, changed lenses and set up for another shot and found the back was way over-exposing, giving a full white frame with some red bars. it did this for three shots. I pulled out some hair!

re-booted by a battery withdrawal and all was well

a pic from today, tweaked a bit

Thank God I am not the only one going for rusty metal :)

jlm try that same file in Aperture. If you don't have it I think you should buy it.

Did you switch off the back while changing lenses?

OK, kids, my CFV-39 arrived today, as scheduled.

Some quick notes here from my first couple of hours getting to know my new friend...

* Back arrived with a number of sync cables, a vertical split recticle screen with CFV-39 rectangular and square markings, an L battery adapter, paperwork, and a SanDisk 4GB Extreme IV card in the Hasselblad box. Also included in the shipping box, likely added by my dealer was the Sony branded battery and charger.

* The back writes .3FR files to the CF card, which are readable by Lightroom. If you Import via Phocus, it will write copies of your pictures, but as .FFF files.

* The CFV-39 back cannot be properly mounted with an unmodified PM-90 finder. That being said, the required additional clearance is no more than ~2mm. I'm guessing that the finder can be readily modified with a small amount of grinding. I was, with some creativity, able to get them both mounted together, but I do not believe the back was properly seated, so without modifying a bit of the PM-90 finder, it is best to consider other 90-degree finders. The finder did not block the CFV-39 screen when mounted.

* ISO 800 + Phocus = happiness! Very nice software cleanup of the chroma noise. The first time I'd consider shooting an MFDB at ISO 800 for saleable work.

* The FE 110/2 is knocking me out! Very impressive and works well with the CFV-39. I had this lens with my former Sinar/Rollei Hy6 kit, but was not this impressed with it... (It may have been the back I was using at the time.)

As luck would have it, today is grey and rainy. Still, I'm heading out this afternoon to see what I can find... I believe 'rusty metal' is the de-facto CFV-39 new owner's theme so I will go to shoot some work from an abandoned industrial site... :)

Take care,
-Brad

Hurrah! Congratulation Brad. I hope you will have many happy hours with your new expensive acquisition.

Rusty metal is a good start.

Thank you, Saad!

I did some shooting (copying now) and my wife has been so patient through all of this, we went for a nice dinner together afterward. It was the least I could do for her patience putting up with me and my camera 'habit'...

I haven't yet learned to judge the actual image quality by the back's screen yet, but my fingers are crossed--I may have one or two nice photos from my exploits this afternoon.

I'll try to post some sample photos early tomorrow morning, Pacific time.

Best regards,
-Brad

Brad

Congratulation .

I can very well understand your excitement .

I would very much like to join in an show some pics , but as my OSX is chrashed , I have currently no chance to use PHOCUS or PSCS4 or LR2 .
We had heavy rainfalls here in the last two days , and I decided not to do any useless shooting , but got familiar with the CFV-39 back .
The handling is almost exactly as with my CFV-16 . I do like that very much .

As I live here deep in the country side and there is no MAC dealer here , I will have to travel to my other home , which is about 220 km away .
There I have a good MAC service point and the technician will take care of my issue by tomorrow .

BTW , for those of you who are interested , there is the CFV-16 A-MATTE screen available now . Part number is 3042260 . About 200$ .

You can easily modify the screen by adding the 37x49 markings .
Use a very thin water resistant black ink pen .
You then have the advantage to use the split image area for the landscape orientation .
You can of course also do that to the CFV-39 screen . Then you will have a kind of 37x49mm cross marking . Very useful as well .

Don't worry , you can always remove your markings again , if desired , by using a slightly moistered Q-tip (isopropyl alcohol)

took some more shots this am, will post later. can't seem to escape the nautical theme, not surprising since I live at the south street seaport and work in the Navy yard!
am loving my 40mmIF. took quite a few shots in portrait mode, no real problem. I use the cube and the 45 prism finder.

couldn't get the back to shut off; usually a long press of the off button will do it. had to pop the battery.

One great thing with the CFV39 is that ever since I received it, the date and time have remained exactly accurate. This was never the case with CFV16 no matter how long it was left on or connected.

Wow.. so it can do what any $5 watch can do: keep the time :z04_pc2:

Sad news--not a single critically sharp picture from my shoot yesterday. :(

I have some troubleshooting to do to find out where the problem is. *sigh*

I'll keep you posted once I learn anything...

-Brad

Hello Bradley,

That is sad news indeed.
I suppose you had a chance to use another body just to eliminate the chance the body is the cause of this problem?

Besides a different body maybe also try different settings with focusing like + and - 5% to see if this is a calibration problem for the back.

Keep us posted. We like good news but also share bad news with you.

when i popped my first image up in Phocus, it was disappointing. after about 40 seconds, it snapped into crystal clear focus. must be some sort of pre-view that gets updated after a bit.

I'm still working out issues with phocus:
-when the 3FR files are imported, even though i spec a path in the Import dialog box, they get dumped onto my desktop and I had to move them by hand. typically I start a new file with the date, dump all the raw 3FR into that. then create a sub for imports and a sub for processed. When I import, I want P to send the .fff files to the /date/import folder. when I export .tif should go to the /date/processed folder (that works)
-i'm not getting a default daylight wb (what i shoot with mostly) when P opens the raw file; it goes to 4500 and I have to correct to about 5500.
-on my last session P loaded all shots with a +1.41 exposure...not sure why

I did get some very crisp shots today, will post when processing is done

Hi Brad, you don't have a problem. I found that a tripod is a must, mirror up, minimum preferable shutter speed of 250/1, use lens shutter not 203FE.

Phocus does its own thing with noise removal in darker areas of the picture even if it is on iso 50, this takes the edge off sharpness in those areas. Last, you have to add 70-100 points on the sharpening scale in Phocus. The pictures from the CFV39 are completely flat with nothing added except the stupid noise removal at low iso's.

If you are doing handheld the minimum shutter speed of 750/1 and a preferable 1250/1.

If you want detail in the shadows with a pinch of noise then you must use Aperture.
