Focus problem with 503CX + CFV

Help please!
Hi
I've inherited a 503CX + CFV back (16mp), I focused on a subject but when I uploaded it to the computer the subject was out of focus but behind the subject was as sharp as a tack. I tested all three lens and the results are the same (lens - 50mm, 80mm & 150mm).
To get a sharp image I have to focus on the subject and then pull the focus back a bit, which is a bit hit and miss and not ideal.
Has anyone had this problem and did they resolve it?

Help please!

Test by using distance scale on lens. Make proper measurement to the object/subject. If this is OK then its either something with the magnifier/prism (maybe wrong diopter) or with the setting of the mirror or focusing screen making the focus coming in the wrong place.

Check that the focusing screen is set properly by taking away the viewing device. There should be two sliding stoppers/locks on each side pushing down the focusing screen.

If focus is wrong with the prefocusing then it might be the settting of the digital back - I'm however not an expert when it comes to service of these things so it would be good to have a chat with an experienced serviceman.

Remember that these machines needs regular service!

Good luck

Probably the body is out of wack (= misaligned, focusing screen misaligned, dropped or somesuch). The focusing screen is not upside down I hope (you never know what some people manage to do ;-)

Can you try the CFV on another body with the same lenses?

Many thanks for the useful comments, apparently the camera has been like this for the last 4 years, so I feel it is overdue a service and would be well worth getting it done.

There is a setting for the miror position that will be done when servicing.
BTW digtal need much more effort for foccusng as it's too eazy to view pitures at 100% on screen !

Yeah I do think the mirror has moved, as suggested by earlier reply I compared the distance scale when focused at various lengths to an actual measurement with a tape measure and it's well out,
For example - distance scale on lens = 2m
Actual measurement. = 1.8m
The worse example was -
Scale on lens = 15m
Actual. =. 10m
When shooting at f4 or f2.8 it's well noticeable

Correct alignment according to Hasselblads recommendations can only be done with factory tools like a jig to align the mirror.

1. Mirror needs to be set at 45 degrees by using this tool

2. Focusing screen is adjusted after the mirror setting has been done.

3. The correct distance from lensmount to rear of the body where the film back or digital back is mounted needs to be checked and adjusted accordingly.

Any attempt to correct misalignment without the necessary factory tools and sufficient experience is useless.

I'm not going to mess about with it in any way, it's going to Hasselblad to be corrected.

Hello Del,

Of course I was not pointing the finger at you here.
Just general advice to leave these matters to the right person.

Hasselblad will do a good job. Could be useful to send in the CFV back as well.
The service department can check and adjust the back if necessary.

Of course we can fix it ourselves if we want to make our Hasselblad into a Lomo.....:z04_hinterherjagen:

Totally agree with you all and many thanks for the advice, I'm taking all the kit (body, 3 lens and CFV back etc) to Hasselblad's workshop by hand and have the lot checked over better safe than sorry.

focus problem fixed

Hi Guys
thanks again for the advice, just got back from the Hasselblad repair centre in Elstree Hertfordshire, they fixed the problem while I waited, all they had to do was reset the mirror and replace a damper I feel Christmas as come early.

This kind of this kind of excellent service used to be world wide available.
Those days are gone forever.

Good for you the camera only needed a small service to bring it back to its former glory.
Happy shooting now that winter is coming up!
