Happy New Year Gary !!!!

More pics like that ... Wahooooooo!

Damn, I wish my weddings were in places like that ... although I did one on New Years Eve in the wonderful old Detroit Athletic Club. Can't show the pics because I used a Sony A900 :-(

My god, what a gorgeous place to have a wedding! Where do the prices start, I wonder?

Marc, photograph the A900 print with the H :)

Hello Marc,

Getting used to the privilege of being selfemployed?
I wish you all the best for the new year and lots of loaded customers willing to pay for the excelent wedding shoots you do.

I will gladly make an exception for you to show us some pics of the shoot at the Detroit Athletic Club.
So go ahead if you want to. You have a clear green light here.

Marc, Happy New Year to you and S. I'm sure your new venture will be very successful. Will follow your antics closely. It's 50 weeks since my visit to Franklin - an anniversary coming up. :)

Just purchased a mint FE-110. Now have to decide between the 110 and the 120 Makro. Obviously, I expect the 110 to be the keeper. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Gary

Hi Gary,

Depends on what you have in mind to do.

The 120 is a very good lens and will perform best with up to 1,5 m object distance.
The 100 mm lens will make an excellent complementary pair for anything from 1m onwards.

The 110 is in a class of its own when used wide open.
Image quality is limited but that is often exactly what is needed.
Stopped down 2-4 stops it is a great general purpose lens.

In fact all three should be part of a kit! :z04_dance00:

Paul

Arrrgggghhhhh !!!!

Image quality is limited - where's the razor ??

I've never wanted image quality to be limited, especially on a $5,000 lens. Perhaps we understand different things with that statement, Paul.

Everything I've read on this lens tell me it's the best lens in the V system - "limited quality...... O..."

Now my uses are typically head and shoulders portrait to part landscape (i.e. not the whole of the Wild West in one frame).

Occasional close-ups with extension rings, but not as a habit.

I like wide open to isolate and emphasise, but I like a very sharp plane as well.

I bought the f2 for a brighter screen and easier focussing, more pronounced bokeh ..... and excellent (not limited} overall performance.

I have an excellent 60-120 zoom as well, but it's a 100% tripod lens.

Am hoping that the FE-110, 80mm CFE, 50mm CF and an SWC with film backs and a CFV back would be a good all around short kit. :z04_dance00:

Gary

ps move this if you want, Paul.

Hi Gary,

I am talking strictly in the technical sense of optical constructions.
Look at the MTF curves to see what I mean.
Limited is amongst other things the ultra small depth of field for the 110 when used wide open.
Not a bad thing and quite often wanted for portraits and other situations where only selective focus is needed or wanted.

The same goes for Noctilux lenses from Leica: very fast optics with quite clear optical limitations.
Those limitations are exactly what is wanted for a number of applications.

You like wide open with a clear plane for focus. With the 110 you have everything under control.
From ultra small depth of field to controlled depth of field after stopping down.
I mentioned the 100 and the 120 to make clear that every lens has an application where it will perform best.

The castle shot would be a great one for the 100 mm if the angle of view suits you.
Do not use the 120 for this kind of image. The results will disappoint you.

Do not let these remarks spoil your first shots with the 110.
Simply use the lens and see what it does for you.
I am quite sure you will be positively surprised.

Paul

Amasing that the 110mm is better than the CF 80mm if you use them at 5.6 !
BTW amasing too: the Noctilux (the 1.0 as 0.95) make better pictures at 5.6 than other 50mm Leica lenses at 5.6...

The 110mm lens justify the buy of a F camera.
Ok the 110mm is a perfect gentle lens for portraits at 2.0, however at 5.6 it's an excellent lens for landscape too ! ... the close distance of the 110mm is interesting too ! I realy love this lens: I have 2 pieces !
The Zeiss Macro 120mm for Hasselblad is not the best 6x6 Zeiss Macro 120mm lens !

There are two Zeiss Macro lenses for Hasselblad:
The S-Planar lens from the sixties with largest aperture 5.6 and the later Makro Planar with F4.0.
The S-Planar beats the later Macro Planar as far as close range photography is concerned.
Zeiss will fully change the later Makro Planar into a more general purpose lens.
A pity they did not stick with the original formula of the S-Planar.

The S-Planar is from the C series and contaions a Compur shutter.
That lens is a full metal construction build to last another life time if bought now as a s/h lens in good condition.

The later developed Macro APO lens for Contax is a dream come true.
It made me think about buying a Contax body.....

I picked up a Contax 645, among other reasons, for the excellent reputation enjoyed by this lens, as well as the 35mm f/3.5. I am just gearing up to shoot now, and picked up some film today (could only find T-Max400 and HP5; Tri-X will have to come too, but probably not for macro work). I have not shot film for quite a while, and was unsure which colour film is good now. I have shot 1 roll of Portra 160 with the 120 Macro, the 80/2, the 35/3.5 and the Hasselblad 110/2, but did not see the results yet. Any recommendations for a good film to do the 120/4 Macro justice?

in B&W: Efke25

With a sturdy tripod of course.

Wilko

For the 120 Macro I would use Technical Pan from my fast diminishing stock.

Technical Pan is nla since a couple of years and is to me still the standard for high resolution BW film.

Never used Efke 25. But I trust Wilko's judgement in this matter.

Colour negative any Portra NC but preferably the 160 ISO.

Since I am just getting back into film, and don't know how far I want to go with it, I would rather experiment with something which will be around for a while, so I will skip Technical Pan (unless they start making it again), and look for some Efke. I have vaguely heard of it before, and doing a little research around it seems well respected. However, it is hard to find a vendor. Any recommendations for Germany? Do you develop in XTol? Apparently it scans very well, which appeals, since I am more likely to do some scanning than some old-fashioned printing, at least in the near future.

An option seems to be Adox, which apparently is just relabelled Efke? I can find this at FotoImpex which is close to where I live.

Thanks for the tips!

Post more pix

There are some wonderful images throughout this thread. Having just got home from hospital I trawled through the thread as a distraction and loved them all.

I got a great laugh from Christian's post in September that accompanied his picture of a gorgeous woman:
"My beauty CFV, 80 CFE.

Sunday stroll with my girlfriend."

I wasn't shure whom the "beauty" was!! :)

I have tried Marc's suggested larger image post but alas unless I stick to a max of 600x600 with a file size of 127k, then only the path gets posted.

So here is one from a past trip to Newcastle - the famous Nobby. I also shot it 6x12 on the Linhof at the other end of the day.

Shot with a 501CM, Fujichrome Provia 400 and CF 50mm FLE.
