Hd4-31

I'm thinking of buying this model which would be my first medium format. I am not a professional photographer. I did graduate from a correspondence training school, (NYIP). I have been waiting for two years for Nikon to release the next high MP model. Now, it appears that may not happen for a very long time due to the Japan tragedy. So, I am now more focused on the HD4-31. Some questions: is dust a problem? When I take pictures I don't shoot hundreds at a time. I don't need speed nor high ISO. I'm more interested in image quality. I have a MacPro and a 30" cinema so I'm not concerned about large files. I don't need video in a camera. Since I am not a pro, I have to save my money. What is the best way for me to decide that this camera would be a good choice?, e.g., compared to a D3x. Thanks for any help.

Look for posts from Fotografz at this forum and most of your questions will be answered.
Keep in mind you also need a powerful graphic card and processor to work on large files.

MF digital stands to Nican digital like MF film stands to 35 mm film.
I hope this gives you some idea what MF digital is about as far as IQ is concerned.

Right now the 31 Mp camera is about half of the amount of pixels offered for MF.
Please note pixelcount is not to be confused with IQ.

In terms of IQ, the H4D/31 will outperform the D3X and most likely the D4X whenever there is one. I've owned both digital units, so I'm not just speculating on this. Size matters.

The bonus of the H4D/31 is that it is a H4 ... with the best AF system in MFD ... True Focus/Absolute Position Lock is amazing and very useful.

Dust can get on any sensor, the good part about any modular MFD camera is that it is easy to simply remove the back and blow it off.

Hi Allen,

I've just completed the NYIP course myself and gone the same way; be it that I didn't want to spend too much on MF so bought a older H1 with Imacon (22mp) back. In comparison to my Nikon D700...... well..... to be honest, the D700 is nowhere near the Imacon ! Don't know if you've worked with the D700 and up until recently I thought this was the best I could get for my money... thus not. I have the 'standard' 80 mm which came with the H1 and just recently bought an older (V-type) 50 mm which I use with the CF adapter. Works perfect as long as you're not in a hurry.

regards,
Erik

Hi all,

Any experienced users with the H4D-31? What are your opinions with this body : is it a good deal?

Thanks for your feedbacks.
