Need help with errors

I'd like some advice. After purchasing a H4D-50 in November and having three "Communication Error" messages without a code, I sent it back and received a replacement. The replacement has been worse and no one at Hasselblad has been able to troubleshoot this. In addition to the general Communication Error, I've had numerous errors that read "Exposure Not Possible - Check Magazine." I checked the pins on the back and everything was fine. In every case, after I unplug the battery grip and plug it back in, the camera works fine. The camera works fine in every other regard. I get an error message typically once or twice a week and it's not really bothersome. But it is a problem (I don't think there's a magnetic field around my house that causes camera errors) and I'd like to resolve it. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd like your help. At this point I'm probably going to ask for another replacement. I don't know what else to do.

Same Problem with H4D 50MS HC80mm

Hello, We've got same error messages generally. Today while we were at shooting, after 10 or 20 shot, camera locked by lens. I looked for every situation for fixing it, but couldn't solve the problem. There was a "No Lens" and "error code 103:1" message on the front LCD. Then we attached another lens, it worked fine! But still don't understand why the lens locked itself while everything is right and clean.. We gave the lens back to dealer today for fix..

Does anybody know what are these codes meaning?

Also sometimes I see "check magazine-restart camera " with an error code message, and I don't know how to restart the camera? The power button doesn't work when that message comes up. We generally replace the battery and camera starts up again.

How can I restart the camera without removing the battery?

Thank you.

Could be battery issue

Thanks for replying. I don't think there is a way to restart the camera without taking the battery out and replacing it. At least I haven't figured out a way. Basically, the camera is like a computer. If it crashes, you have to shut off the power first before it will restart. As for the errors, it's still a mystery, but I sent mine back to Hasselblad and Paul Claesson in the support department said he thinks it has to do with the battery. He advised me to replace the battery when it gets down to 25 or 30 percent, the theory being that if the battery gets down to 0% and the camera shuts down you basically crash the camera, hence the errors. Hope this helps.

battery?

Very very Interesting.. Ok, if it's just a battery situation, did you ever experience these errors with a full or half percent battery? Because today it was %50 when i see the message. And once i saw at %70-80.

The real problem is; how can I explain this "battery myth" to the other photographers? I think they will not believe me. :)

Kind Regards

Possible explanation

I've had errors at all different percentages. Paul explained that the chip on the battery can be corrupted if it is not conditioned properly and also if you let it run down to 0%. And if it becomes corrupted you will continue to get errors. He said he's seen this problem on other cameras but only rarely. I don't know if I completely buy the explanation though. It seems weird that a battery can cause so many problems with a $30,000 camera. But at this point there doesn't seem to be any other explanation because it's an intermittent problem. I've tested it. Tech support has tested it. I should also say that this camera replaced another with the same issues. Paul told me they refurbished it and resold it and the new owner hasn't registered any complaints. Another possibility could be a firmware issue. But they haven't received enough complaints.

Did you try to clean the data pins with ethanol ? Clean also the battery contacts with it. You can reset the battery grip too, by taking off the battery, pushing at the same time Flash + Menu and put back the battery at the same time. You will hear quick bips. Another tip : to reset the camera settings : Iso + Menu and put back the battery. Hope this will help.

Oui Oui

I've cleaned the pins, though not with alcohol and reset the battery perhaps a dozen times. I also reset the body and then reset the battery. The latest is that I returned the body, back, kit lens, two batteries, and a bunch of accessories to Hasselblad for testing. Paul Claesson tested it for two weeks and only received one error after over a thousand captures. He attributed it to running the battery to 0% and advised me to recharge at 25 or 30 percent.

my battery gets quickly near 30% even at full charge. I can do about 80 photos. But it's not new, maybe it's time to buy a new one...

Try resetting

If the reset doesn't work, then I'm pretty sure you need a new battery. 80 is way too low. They should get hundreds. I just received two new ones from Hasselblad and they were tested at more than 900 captures each.

I wanted to add that there are a number of factors that impact battery life.

1. Standby timeout; H Custom option #1 changed from default 10 seconds to 15, 30 seconds or Never.
2. Utilizing the on camera flash will cut the number of captures by 50%.
3. Frequent or excessive use of Autofocus.

Paul, what can be the problem if I use 3.7V CR123A on the CR123 battery grip instead of 3V batteries ? I saw that 3.7V have more mAh (like 2200mAh instead of 1000mAh for 3V) ?

I checked with our hardware designer and have been informed that the digital magazine can use a maximum of 10.0 VDC. Above that threshold there is a risk for damage to the digital magazine. So 3.3 VDC per cell is maximum.
I have recently seen a customer using 2 - 3v (600mAh) and 1 -3.7v (600mAh), total 9.7v with success.

Paul,

I wonder what you meant a few posts ago when you mentioned that battery life is adversely affected by frequent or excessive use of Autofocus?

I assumed that use of Autofocus was the default state for the camera.

Thanks.

Hi Richard,

The default is AF-S (Auto Focus Single).
When i refer to excessive use of auto focus is when I have seen photographers focusing from a close focus distance and then focusing at far off distance and back again. Obviously this is not common practice but I have seen it enough that I thought it worthwhile mentioning.
