New addition to family... H3D

After many years of being a faithful 503cxi user, I've made the switch to a H system machine....
We tested the CFV-50, and quite frankly, I found it very difficult to achieve accurate focus - it seems you get to an age when you simply need to rely on AF. My hit and miss ratio just simply didn't warrant the purchase.

So after much ado, I found a very good H3D-31 with 80mm lens at a near bargain price....

  • Manual exposure
  • ISO 200

I want to thank forum members Fotografz (Marc), Ed Bray and Keith Laban for pointing me in the right direction.

Ed - thanks a lot for the CF adapter - it works swell..

Now, let's hope the weather improves for an outing...!

My pleasure to help, and thank you for your prompt payment.

I love my H1 more and more with use, the 3 HC lenses I have (35mm, 80mm & 150mm) I have give me a lovely spread of focal lengths even allowing for the 1:1 crop factor as the -1.6x AOV crop factor compared to 35mm AOV gives the following 24mm, 55mm and 103mm but the format is better than 35mm as it has a 4:3 ratio as opposed to 35mm which has a 3:2 ratio.

The image quality from the 528C back for what is a relatively cheap back (now) is fantastic. A few years ago it was the top of the tree, and it's easy to see why, and I suspect that even now in it's 16x Multishot mode it will outdo many newer backs, the downside is the multishot only works with static images such as still lifes.

Thanks Ed - my pleasure!
Digital items have a short half-life, just have a look at how fast dSLR's change.
What most forget is that working tools used by pro's in the past - like your HB back - or our D700's - still deliver fantastic results.
I'm sure that your multi-shot system is superb - the new h4d-50MS is the standard for those shooting products e.g. Rolex catalogues - as it is still the best way to increase resolution and remove moiré.
I see no need for an annual up-grade, just for the sake of keeping up with the latest fad.
Take care and keep shooting, S :)

Let's see some photos FROM, not of, the new camera! : -)

Can't wait to hear your impressions once you get to shooting with it.

-Marc

Thanks Keith and Marc,

I'll certainly post some photos once we've been out for a decent test-ride.

So far, I'm really liking this camera - don't know what kept me from switching sooo long...!

Have to start saving for that 28mm...!
