Good decision or Bad decision

I have a friend who was willing to sell her 180mm CF lens rather cheap. It had very little use and has only been sitting around. The last picture I took with my Hasselblad was last year some time. Now that I have a Nikon D700 I rarely, if ever, shoot film.

I've always wanted the 180mm Hasselblad lens. That was the lens that I wanted the day I purchased the 553ELX. However, I needed to get other, more necessary lenses purchased first. So now that the time had come, my friend was just about to send me the lens to just "test" and I just told her "don't bother sending it."

Did I make a good decision or bad? What do you think? I can always go back to her and ask her to send it.

Get it. If you regret it later, send it back or pass it on.

I got my 120mm Makro Planar in a similar fashion. A long-time friend went digital in her practice (small town portrait/wedding studio) and didn't need the Hasselblad gear. I only picked up the 120mm as it was all my disposable income would cover.

I don't regret it. It was my only lens for quite a while - I found reasons to use it and still do.

The 180mm is a great lens, a sterling performer. I got mine about 10 years ago when the average price used price was $2000. I paid $1600 which was a real deal at the time. Now they are in the $600-900 all day long. An incredibly low price for this great lens. One of my favorite focal lengths. Get it or you will regret it!

I wrote my friend back and she's going to end me the lens to try it out. I'm actually quite anxious to see it. She keeps all her equipment CLEAN (unbelievably clean), so I know it looks new (she purchased it new). It was hardly ever used, if at all. It has a new CZ filter on the front too. So basically she's losing over $2000 over what she paid for the lens.

If I end up not buying it she's going to put it on ebay.

I'm interested to see a picture of the CZ hood on the cf 180.

I've allready a CZ (50mm one) hood for my CF 60mm !

Here you go.

Just an update on the lens. It literally looks brand new and not a speck of dust on it. She really took great care of this lens. Even the lens and hood mounts are perfect. I pressed the shutter a few times, but haven't shot any real pictures yet. The weight of the lens is very close to the 120mm that I've used for years.

I need to go out and shoot a few frames and see if I really like it. At the moment, though, I think I'm going to send it back since I haven't really shot with the Hasselblad in such a long time.

This shade looks pretty much like a standard 100-250 mm shade for CF lenses to me.

Nice camera!

the real question is are you going to be using the Hasselblad or D700 more....I actually have both and I prefer the Hasselblad any day!!!!!!!!!! as people know around here i am a film lover so i am biased.

Biased? What is wrong with film? We have been using film more than 100 years.
Imagine what would happen if in this day of digital power film would be announced as a new recording medium.
No more hassles with locked cameras and lost images, widely extended temperature operating range with guaranteed results, cheaper than digital capture considering all investments needed for digital storage and processing etc.

Sadly I sent the lens back to my friend. I had the lens for 2 weeks and I literally took the lens out of the box twice. I took a total of zero pictures on film or even with the Nikon D700 with Hassy adapter.

I think I didn't want to ruin how "perfect" the lens was. I mean it was 99.99% in mint condition. I'm the type of that if I'm going to have equipment I'm going to use it. No matter how careful I am I usually nick it somehow, so I didn't want to take a chance.

So, she'll be putting it up for sale on epray or if anyone is interested I can tell her to post it here (or I can do it if she doesn't want to make an account).
